Senior Comms Manager at Canonical - Remote EMEA — Columbus
Traveler-Friendly Insight
Canonical is one of the most nomad-friendly employers in tech — fully remote since 2004, with a 1,200-person team spread across 75+ countries. For digital nomads, this role is a genuine fit: there is no physical office requirement, and the culture is built around asynchronous collaboration.
Timezone considerations: The role is scoped to the EMEA region, which typically means you should be reachable during European or Middle Eastern business hours (roughly UTC to UTC+3). This still leaves significant flexibility — popular nomad bases like Lisbon (UTC+1), Tbilisi (UTC+4, slightly outside but workable), and Cape Town (UTC+2) all align well. Southeast Asia (Bangkok, Bali) would be a stretch given the UTC+7 offset.
Visa options across EMEA:
- Portugal — Digital Nomad Visa (D8) is ideal; Lisbon and Porto are very popular with tech workers
- Germany — Freelancer visa possible, though employment contracts are easier
- UAE/Dubai — Remote Work Visa available; tax-free income is a draw
- Georgia — Remotely from Georgia programme (1-year permit, low cost of living)
Travel perks are a highlight: Canonical offers a Priority Pass for airport lounges and travel upgrades for long-haul company events, plus 2–4 in-person sprints per year in varied global locations. The $2,000 USD annual L&D budget can supplement coworking costs. No explicit coworking stipend is mentioned, so clarify this with your Talent Partner.
