Remote Mechanical Engineer (Siemens NX) - Worldwide — Columbus
Traveler-Friendly Insight
This role is listed as fully remote, open to anyone in the world — a genuine location-independent contract. However, nomads should carefully consider a few practical realities before applying.
Timezone flexibility: The posting doesn't specify required overlap hours, but the emphasis on "minimal onboarding" and fast turnaround suggests synchronous communication will be expected at least occasionally. Plan to align with a US or European business day window, as Toptal's clients are predominantly based there.
Visa considerations: Because this is a short-term contract engagement (likely through Toptal's freelance network), you can legally work from most countries on a tourist visa as a self-employed contractor — no work permit is typically required. Popular nomad bases work well here:
- Lisbon, Portugal: Excellent engineering coworking scene; monthly costs ~$2,000–$2,800. Portugal's Digital Nomad Visa is an option for longer stays.
- Bangkok, Thailand: Very affordable (~$1,200–$1,800/month); strong coworking infrastructure. Thailand's LTR Visa suits remote workers with provable income.
- Medellín, Colombia: Growing tech hub, costs ~$1,000–$1,500/month; Colombia's Digital Nomad Visa available for stays over 90 days.
Practical note: This role requires heavy use of Siemens NX — a resource-intensive CAD platform. Ensure you have a high-performance laptop or access to a remote workstation, plus a reliable high-speed internet connection. A coworking space with wired ethernet is strongly recommended over café Wi-Fi for large assembly file transfers.
