Traveler-Friendly Insight

This role is listed as #LI-Remote with headquarters across California, New York, and Washington — and the location hint indicates global eligibility. However, there are important caveats for nomads to consider carefully.

Timezone and travel realities: As a manager of a global community advocacy team and a partner to Product, Engineering, Marketing, and Events teams at Datadog, this role almost certainly requires significant overlap with US business hours. Expect mandatory sync meetings during Pacific or Eastern time windows. While no fixed hours are stated explicitly, managing direct reports and aligning cross-functionally with US-based stakeholders makes fully async work unlikely. A UTC-5 to UTC-8 overlap (roughly 6–10 hours) is practically necessary.

Conference travel: The role explicitly involves overseeing speaker coaching for Datadog's DASH conference and third-party industry events. Expect periodic travel to US and international tech conferences — which can actually complement a nomadic lifestyle if timed strategically.

Salary vs. nomad cost of living: The $212,000–$265,000 USD salary is exceptionally strong for remote work:

  • Lisbon, Portugal: Comfortable lifestyle under $3,000/month — this salary covers 5–7x that comfortably.
  • Bangkok, Thailand: $2,000–$2,500/month for a high-end lifestyle — massive purchasing power advantage.
  • Medellín, Colombia: $1,800–$2,500/month — outstanding value given the salary range.

No specific coworking or equipment stipend is mentioned, but fitness reimbursements and competitive benefits suggest a generous total package. Visa-wise, Portugal's D8 digital nomad visa, Thailand's LTR visa, and Colombia's digital nomad visa are all viable given the salary level.

Developer Advocates at Datadog are engineers who share their expertise with technical practitioners, help customers tell their stories, and represent the perspectives of our community inside Datadog.

As a Manager II on the Advocacy team, you will lead our Community Advocacy functions. You will manage a team of Developer Advocates responsible for global programs such as Datadog Ambassadors, Champions, and User Groups, as well as opportunities for customer engineers to share their expertise through technical writing, public speaking, and other community contributions.

Across these interconnected programs, your team will enable customer engineers to contribute technical knowledge, lead communities, and turn their experiences into compelling content and conference talks for Datadog and third-party channels. This role combines people leadership, program strategy, technical judgment, and cross-functional influence to amplify authentic customer voices, deepen understanding of Datadog and its products, and foster a thriving community of practitioners.

What You'll Do:

  • Lead and develop a team of Developer Advocates, setting clear expectations, guiding priorities, coaching performance, supporting career growth, and fostering an inclusive, high-performing culture
  • Own the strategy, goals, and roadmap for Community Advocacy, translating broader Advocacy and company priorities into focused programs and measurable outcomes
  • Guide the continued development of our Ambassador, Champion, and User Group programs, creating clear contributor journeys, expectations, enablement, recognition, and opportunities for customer engineers to increase their impact
  • Build repeatable systems that enable customer engineers to contribute technical knowledge, create content, share best practices, and serve as trusted leaders within their communities
  • Develop a strong pipeline of customer stories by identifying compelling practitioners and helping them shape authentic, technically credible narratives
  • Oversee the support, co-development, and coaching of conference talks by customer engineers—from identifying an idea and developing an abstract through content review, rehearsal, and delivery—for Datadog events, including our flagship user conference, DASH, as well as third-party industry conferences
  • Establish measures of success for Community Advocacy, using qualitative and quantitative insights to evaluate program health, contributor engagement, content quality, audience impact, and customer outcomes
  • Partner closely with Product, Engineering, Marketing, Events, Customer Success, and regional teams to align priorities, identify opportunities, and scale customer participation across Datadog initiatives
  • Ensure insights from Ambassadors, Champions, User Group participants, speakers, and other community members are shared with the appropriate teams inside Datadog, strengthening the connection between our customers and our products
  • Balance strategic leadership with selective hands-on contribution, including coaching speakers, reviewing technical content, participating in community programs, and representing Datadog when appropriate

Who You Are:

  • You are an experienced people manager who has led autonomous technical professionals, coached performance, developed talent, and translated complex goals into achievable plans
  • You have experience defining and delivering successful developer advocacy, developer relations, technical community, or a related function
  • You have built or meaningfully contributed to programs that enable external practitioners to participate, contribute, create content, or lead communities at scale
  • You have experience helping technical practitioners develop and communicate their stories, including coaching conference speakers or co-developing technically credible talks and content
  • You are a former software developer, SRE, or other technical practitioner—or have equivalent technical depth—with the judgment needed to assess technical accuracy and coach effective technical narratives
  • You are a thoughtful cross-functional leader who can build alignment, make prioritization decisions, and influence partners across Product, Engineering, Marketing, Events, and customer-facing organizations
  • You use both data and community insight to evaluate program effectiveness, identify opportunities, and make decisions about where the team should invest
  • You understand how to build trust with technical communities and value authentic practitioner voices over purely promotional messaging
  • You are comfortable operating through ambiguity, establishing structure where needed, and evolving programs as Datadog's products, customers, and technical audiences grow
