Remote Merchandise Manager – USA TODAY Co. US — Columbus
Traveler-Friendly Insight
This role is tagged #LI-REMOTE, suggesting some degree of remote flexibility — however, the day-to-day reality significantly limits true location independence. The Merchandise Manager is required to be physically present at RAGBRAI live events, manage retail activations on-site, move equipment, and oversee in-person sales transactions. This means regular travel within the US is mandatory, not optional.
Timezone considerations: No specific timezone is stated, but coordination with US-based Marketing, Creative, and Event Operations teams strongly implies standard US business hours (likely Central or Eastern time, given RAGBRAI's Iowa base).
For nomads considering this role: This is best described as a "travel-heavy domestic role" rather than a true remote position. You'd need a US work authorization and a home base in the US. International nomad visa strategies (e.g., Bali, Tbilisi, or Medellín digital nomad visas) are not compatible with this job's physical event demands.
Salary vs. nomad cost of living: At $45,000–$50,000/year (~$3,750–$4,167/month), purchasing power would be strong in cities like:
- Medellín, Colombia: ~$1,200–1,800/month comfortable living — strong surplus
- Lisbon, Portugal: ~$2,500–3,200/month — tight but workable, though EU work authorization required
- Bangkok, Thailand: ~$1,000–1,500/month — excellent surplus, but US work authorization still required
Bottom line: if you seek a fully async, location-flexible lifestyle, this role is not the right fit. Look instead for fully remote ecommerce or digital merchandising roles without event obligations.
