Traveler-Friendly Insight

This Chief of Staff role at GitLab is built on an async-first, fully distributed culture — one of the most genuinely remote-friendly environments in tech. GitLab literally wrote the book on remote work, and the Revenue Team explicitly operates as an async-first organization, meaning you're not chained to fixed video calls throughout the day.

That said, this role comes with important caveats for nomads:

  • Travel is required — the posting explicitly states "ability to travel as needed to support the CRO," meaning board meetings, QBRs, and executive off-sites will pull you out of your base location periodically.
  • As the CRO's proxy for board materials and executive meetings, you'll likely need to be reachable during US business hours (EST/PST overlap), limiting timezone flexibility compared to individual contributor roles.
  • The role is listed for the USA, so a US base is likely expected despite GitLab's global hiring stance. Non-US nomads should clarify eligibility during recruiting.

If US-based and traveling domestically, this role pairs well with a slow travel lifestyle — spending 1-2 months in cities like Austin, Miami, or Denver. For international nomads, Lisbon (Portugal's D8 Digital Nomad Visa) or Medellín could work logistically during non-travel weeks, but timezone overlap with US leadership would require early mornings in Europe or late evenings in LATAM.

No explicit coworking stipend is mentioned, but GitLab's general benefits package typically includes home office support.
