Remote Bookkeeper AR Role in South Africa - BP3 — Columbus
Traveler-Friendly Insight
This is a fully remote, South Africa-based role — meaning the employer explicitly requires you to be based in South Africa. While that limits pure location-independence, it still suits South African digital nomads who prefer working from different cities (Cape Town, Johannesburg, Durban) or co-working spaces within the country.
Timezone considerations: South Africa operates on SAST (UTC+2). The role involves US sales tax work, suggesting some overlap with US business hours may be needed for queries — though the core AR processing is likely async-friendly. The flexible working benefit signals schedule adaptability.
Visa angle: Since the role is restricted to South Africa, international nomads would need to hold a valid South African work authorization. South Africa does not yet have a formal digital nomad visa, though a remote work arrangement under a standard work permit may be possible for residents.
Cost of living context (for South African-based workers):
- Cape Town: A popular remote-work hub with good co-working infrastructure; mid-range monthly costs ~$800–$1,200 USD.
- Johannesburg: Slightly lower cost with strong business connectivity; ~$700–$1,000 USD/month.
- Durban: More affordable coastal option; ~$600–$900 USD/month.
No equipment stipend or co-working allowance is mentioned, so budget accordingly if you plan to work from shared spaces.
BP3 is looking for an experienced, hands-on Bookkeeper to run day-to-day accounts receivable across our multi-entity group: raising customer and software resale licence invoices, managing collections and receipts, and looking after the AR mailboxes. You will report into our AR Lead. This is a processing-focused role that also supports month-end, and software resale is a big part of our billing, so you will need a strong grasp of licence invoicing and a sharp eye for detail.
Location: South Africa based (remote job)
Contract Type: Permanent
What you'll be doing
- Raise customer invoices accurately and on time across all Group entities, in line with contracts, sales orders and approved pricing.
- Raise software resale licence invoices, matching each invoice to supplier costs and contract terms, and flag upcoming renewals and expiries.
- Maintain billing trackers and monitor billing milestones, working with Sales and Operations so all billable work is invoiced on time.
- Monitor the debtors ageing, follow up overdue accounts, allocate customer receipts against NetSuite invoices, and escalate disputed or long-overdue balances.
- Manage the AR mailboxes, resolving billing queries and processing approved credit notes.
- Set up and maintain customer records, supporting customer onboarding.
- Apply US sales tax codes to customer engagements, prepare the US sales tax reconciliations and resolve sales tax queries.
- Support month-end: prepare the deferred and unbilled revenue reconciliations and the software resale reconciliation for review by the AR Lead, and help with audit requests.
Requirements
- Bookkeeping or accounting qualification (e.g. certificate or diploma in accounting).
- 4+ years of accounts receivable experience, including invoicing, collections and revenue reconciliations.
- Hands-on experience billing software licenses or subscriptions.
- NetSuite experience highly advantageous (or a comparable ERP); Kantata a plus; good Excel skills.
- Experience with US sales tax is advantageous, as is multi-entity experience.
- A detail-oriented, organised operator who can manage a busy mailbox, prioritise, and communicate clearly and professionally with customers.
Benefits
- Remote Working
- Flexible working
- 20 days of annual leave
