Traveler-Friendly Insight

This role is not suitable for digital nomads or location-independent workers. It is a full-time, on-site position at the Atlantic Undersea Test and Evaluation Center (AUTEC) on Andros Island, Bahamas — a remote military installation with limited civilian amenities and medical facilities.

Location Reality: Andros Island is one of the most remote postings in the Caribbean. While technically in the Bahamas, this is not a Nassau resort lifestyle — it is a classified naval facility with restricted access. Candidates must be prepared to reside on or near the base, potentially in employer-provided housing.

  • No remote or hybrid option exists — hands-on physical work with torpedoes and heavy equipment is required daily.
  • US citizenship and an active DoD Secret clearance are mandatory, restricting applicants to a very narrow pool.
  • A valid passport is required, as the work site is in a foreign country (the Bahamas).
  • Working conditions include temperatures exceeding 100°F in full hazmat suits — this is a physically demanding posting.

For nomads seeking defense work abroad: This type of overseas contractor role (OCONUS) can be appealing for the unique location and tax considerations — US citizens working abroad may qualify for the Foreign Earned Income Exclusion (FEIE), potentially exempting significant income from US taxes. However, the remote, controlled-base environment limits lifestyle flexibility considerably.
