Traveler-Friendly Insight

This role is an on-site, physical trade position at a shipyard in Harbour View, Kingston, Jamaica. It requires daily hands-on work with blasting equipment, marine coatings, and industrial machinery — there is no remote or async component whatsoever.

However, the job listing explicitly welcomes expatriate applicants, making it relevant for skilled tradespeople willing to relocate or take a work placement in Jamaica. This opens an interesting avenue for marine industry professionals who want to experience living in the Caribbean while working in their field.

Visa considerations: Expat workers would typically require a Jamaican work permit sponsored by German Ship Repair Jamaica (GSRJ). Jamaica does not currently offer a dedicated digital nomad visa, but employer-sponsored work permits are standard for skilled trades. Processing times and requirements should be confirmed directly with the employer.

Cost of living in Kingston: Kingston is generally affordable compared to Western Europe or North America. Monthly living costs for a single person can range from USD 800–1,400 depending on housing, which is competitive for an expat placement in a trade role.

If you are a nomad or remote worker, this role is not suitable — it demands fixed, full-time physical presence at the shipyard. Look for roles tagged explicitly as remote or hybrid instead.
