OHL Design Engineer at WSP - Remote Global Offices — Columbus
Traveler-Friendly Insight
This role has a noteworthy clause: "you can be placed at any of WSP's offices in Sweden or where WSP has offices globally." This signals genuine geographic flexibility for candidates already within WSP's global office network. However, it is not a fully location-independent remote position — you would be expected to be based at a WSP office, not working from a beach or co-working space of your choosing.
WSP does encourage remote teamwork within Sweden, which suggests some degree of async-friendly culture, but the core collaboration is Sweden-timezone oriented (CET/CEST). Expect to be available during standard European business hours.
Visa considerations: For EU/EEA citizens, working from any WSP EU office is straightforward. Non-EU nationals looking to base themselves in Sweden would need a Swedish work permit. If placed at a non-Swedish WSP office globally, local visa rules apply. This is not a role suited to short-stay tourist visa arrangements.
Without a published salary, it's hard to benchmark precisely, but senior OHL engineers in Sweden typically earn SEK 55,000–75,000/month. That budget stretches very well in cities like Lisbon or Medellín, but this role requires office presence, limiting true nomadic lifestyle options.
- No explicit equipment stipend or co-working allowance mentioned.
- Remote work is encouraged within team context, not fully independent nomad-style.

As an Overhead Line (OHL) Design Engineer at WSP, you will experience a great variety in your work, engaging in projects for multiple clients and network owners. Typical projects involve design, construction, and calculations within the overhead line segment, covering voltage levels from 30 kV to 130 kV.

- Perform tower spotting, line profiling, and routing studies.
- Conduct sag and tension calculations according to international or Scandinavian standards.
- Coordinate with Swedish internal teams.
- Ensure technical compliance, quality, and design optimization.

At WSP, we offer exciting opportunities to work on a diverse range of overhead line projects, both big and small. You have the flexibility to focus on what drives you and supports your professional development. With colleagues spread across Sweden, you will collaborate with highly skilled professionals in various specialties. We strongly encourage close teamwork, even when working remotely.
In this role you can be placed at any of WSP's offices in Sweden or where WSP has offices globally.
To succeed in this role, we believe that you have:
- Bachelor's degree (minimum) in Electrical, Civil, or Mechanical Engineering.
- At least three years of experience in overhead power line design (33–130 kV).
- Strong competence in tower spotting or sag/tension calculations.
- Familiarity with PLS-CADD or similar design tools is a strong advantage.
- Prior experience working on European or Scandinavian utility projects is a plus.
- Knowledge of AutoCAD or Microstation. Experience in Icetow, AvCAD, or similar programs is a merit.
- Previous experience working as a consultant is also considered a plus.
Additionally, we consider it a merit if you have familiarity with AMA standards, construction, and workplace safety regulations.
We operate in an international environment, so it is important that you are comfortable communicating in English. Swedish is a merit.
