AI Founder Role at Mercury - Remote USA & Canada — Columbus
Traveler-Friendly Insight
Location Flexibility & Remote Potential: Mercury explicitly frames this as a non-fixed role built around autonomous small teams — a strong signal for location-independent work. While the job hint targets the US and Canada, the emphasis on outcomes over process, async decision-making, and self-directed teams suggests this role could function well for digital nomads, provided you overlap meaningfully with US Pacific or Eastern time zones for customer collaboration.
Timezone Considerations: Mercury is a US-headquartered fintech. Expect at least partial US business hours overlap (PT/ET). Full async is unlikely given the customer-facing iteration loops, but the founder-team structure typically affords schedule flexibility around core sync windows.
Visa & Location Options: US and Canadian applicants are the primary target. For nomads already authorized to work in either country, this role may allow significant travel flexibility. Non-US/CA nationals should clarify remote eligibility upfront. Portugal's D8 Digital Nomad Visa or Estonia's e-Residency could be relevant for EU-based founders interested in similar roles.
- Lisbon: ~$2,500–3,500/mo cost of living — a competitive SaaS/fintech salary would go far here, though work authorization may be an issue.
- Bangkok: ~$1,500–2,000/mo — excellent for cost arbitrage if remote flexibility is confirmed.
- Medellín: ~$1,200–2,000/mo — Colombia's digital nomad visa is accessible and timezone-compatible with US East Coast.
No explicit travel perks (coworking allowance, equipment stipend) are mentioned, but the startup culture and equity-first compensation suggest those conversations are possible once engaged.
Open Call for Founders / Founding Teams (Product Management / Engineering Roles)
In 1973 at Xerox PARC, Bob Metcalfe sketched a way for many computers to share a single wire — borrowing the throughput math from his study of Hawaii's ALOHAnet — and he and David Boggs built it and measured it until it held. Behind Ethernet was a two-person team that turned a contested idea into the measured standard now carrying almost all the world's wired traffic.
At Mercury, we're looking to accelerate several of our AI products that our customers love — like Command, CLI, and MCP. We're building for ambitious people of all kinds, and are a company made of founders and small technical teams trying to change the world. As part of that, we're taking open applications from founders or small technical teams (Eng+) who want to work together on building the AI products of the future.
This isn't a fixed role. We expect the nature of work is changing, and small teams of people paired with AI product surface and autonomy to build can create 10x outcomes. Apply as a small team or as an individual.
Here are some things you'll do on the job:
- Find the problem. Work close enough to customers that you spot what matters before anyone assigns it to you — then decide it's worth building.
- Build and automate the workflow end to end using Command, CLI, MCP, and the rest of our AI stack.
- Ship to customers fast — quick understanding, tight iteration, deploy.
- Measure the impact honestly, then do the next one. Kill what didn't move; double down on what did.
- Run as an autonomous team — pick the target, ship the thing, own the outcome.
You should:
- Have shipped something real — a product, a tool, a company, or an open-source project people actually use.
- Be dangerous across the stack: PMs who can prototype, engineers with product taste.
- Have strong opinions about AI products and the judgment to recognize fast when one of them is wrong.
- Have hands-on experience building AI products with AI; knowledge about RAG, evals, and agent harnesses is a plus.
- Move fast and measure. Expect most experiments to fail and treat that as the price of finding the ones that don't.
- Care about craft where it's impactful and resist polishing what isn't.
- Communicate clearly and own outcomes — we want real business impact, customer time/pain saved, and a path to scaling what works.
