Linux SysAdmin at Vultr - Remote US Job — Columbus
Traveler-Friendly Insight
Remote-First, But US-State Restricted: This role is fully remote — Vultr lists no physical office requirement — but is limited to residents of 36 specific US states. This means it is not suitable for international nomads or those based outside the US. Even within the US, you must be a legal resident of an approved state to qualify.
Schedule & Async Friendliness: The job description does not specify fixed hours or a required timezone window, which suggests a degree of schedule flexibility. However, as a Linux Systems Administrator supporting global infrastructure, on-call or incident-response duties likely impose some time constraints — expect occasional after-hours work even if day-to-day tasks are flexible.
Work-From-Home Perks That Travel Won't Cover: Vultr offers a $500 first-year home office stipend and $75/month internet reimbursement — useful for a fixed home setup but less practical for nomadic travel. These perks are tied to a stable home address.
Salary vs. Nomad Cost of Living (for US residents only):
- Lisbon, Portugal: ~$2,000–$2,500/mo cost of living — $60–75k USD stretches well, but working remotely from Portugal requires a D8 visa and may affect tax status.
- Bangkok, Thailand: ~$1,200–$1,800/mo — very affordable, but US residency requirements make this non-compliant with the job's terms.
- Medellín, Colombia: ~$1,500–$2,000/mo — similarly cost-effective but again incompatible with the state-residency requirement.
In short: this role suits a US-based remote worker who wants to work from home in a supported state, not a location-independent nomad traveling internationally.
