This role is structured as an independent contractor / private practice arrangement rather than a traditional employment position. Headway provides the platform infrastructure, and as a psychiatrist you set your own hours and patient load — making it theoretically flexible. However, there are critical caveats for digital nomads to consider.
- US licensure is mandatory: A board-certified psychiatrist license is state-specific in the US. You must hold a valid license in the state(s) where you practice, and a DEA/CDS number is required for prescribing. This ties you legally to specific US jurisdictions.
- Telehealth is available, meaning patient sessions can be conducted remotely from home — but US medical licensing law generally requires you to be physically located in a state where you hold licensure while seeing patients. This is not a location-independent role in the traditional nomad sense.
- Not suitable for international remote work: Prescribing controlled substances across borders, maintaining DEA compliance, and state licensure rules make practicing psychiatry from abroad legally complex and potentially prohibited.

For true location independence, look instead for roles in health tech, medical writing, or telehealth platform operations that don't require active clinical licensure.
