Remote Full Stack Engineer at BetterHelp - USA — Columbus
Traveler-Friendly Insight
Is this role nomad-friendly? Partially. BetterHelp explicitly allows remote work from anywhere in the U.S., but the posting requires candidates to be legally authorized to work in the United States. This means international digital nomads or those based outside the U.S. are not eligible — you must maintain U.S. work authorization regardless of where you physically reside domestically.
Timezone & Schedule Flexibility: The job description doesn't mandate specific working hours, and the agile/continuous deployment culture suggests some async flexibility. However, cross-functional collaboration with product managers, designers, and engineers implies core overlap hours are likely expected — probably U.S. business hours (EST–PST range). This limits true timezone freedom to within the U.S. or close time zones.
Salary vs. Cost of Living: At $110K–$160K/year, your purchasing power varies significantly by location:
- Lisbon, Portugal: Not an option (must work from U.S.), but if you're a U.S. citizen on a tourist visa traveling abroad between gigs, $110K goes very far there (~$2,000–$2,500/mo for comfortable living).
- Austin, TX or Denver, CO: $130K+ is competitive; rent runs $1,800–$2,500/mo for a one-bedroom.
- Low cost-of-living U.S. cities (e.g., Tulsa, OK or Chattanooga, TN): Salary stretches significantly, with rent under $1,200/mo.
Travel-Relevant Perks: BetterHelp covers company-requested travel expenses for in-person team events, and offers a hardware/software stipend. No explicit coworking allowance is mentioned, but the equipment benefit may cover peripheral needs for a home-office or temporary workspace setup.

What are we looking for?
We're looking for a talented software engineer who enjoys solving complex problems, learning continuously, and building products that make a meaningful difference. This role is ideal for someone who has delivered multiple challenging projects, takes pride in writing thoughtful, maintainable code, and enjoys both mentoring and learning from teammates.
You'll join an engineering culture that values ownership, curiosity, collaboration, and sound technical judgment. We embrace modern engineering practices and thoughtfully adopt new technologies, including AI, to help engineers focus on solving hard problems while keeping human expertise at the center of every decision.
What will you do?
- Develop end to end, owning features from technical design and development through deployment, monitoring, and continued improvement.
- Write clean, secure, readable, maintainable, and scalable code.
- Collaborate closely with engineers, product managers, designers, and other cross-functional partners.
- Design, integrate, and build internal and external APIs.
- Develop new products and features while improving and modernizing existing systems.
- Write and optimize SQL queries and design relational database schemas.
- Create and maintain complex backend services and algorithms.
- Profile, troubleshoot, and optimize new and legacy code.
- Build experiences that work across mobile, tablet, and desktop environments.
- Contribute to code reviews, technical discussions, and engineering practices that improve quality, reliability, security, and developer experience.
- Ship thoughtfully and frequently in an agile environment with continuous deployment.
- Care about the product, mission, and long-term success, well beyond checking off development tasks.
- Thoughtfully use approved AI-assisted development tools to reduce repetitive work, explore solutions, and improve productivity while applying your own engineering judgment to architecture, implementation, security, privacy, and code quality. Engineers remain accountable for every technical decision.
Technology Stack
We use a mix of established and modern technologies to support a platform serving millions of users. As our products evolve, we're continually improving our architecture, modernizing portions of our codebase, and evaluating technologies that help us build secure, reliable, and scalable software.
- Backend: Linux, nginx, Laravel (PHP), MySQL, Redis
- Frontend: React, Next.js, JavaScript, HTML5, CSS/SASS
- Legacy technologies you may encounter during modernization: Twig, Bootstrap, jQuery
We do not expect candidates to have worked with every technology in our environment. We value strong software engineering fundamentals, curiosity, and the ability to learn unfamiliar systems.
What will you NOT do?
- You will NOT worry about funding. We have startup energy, with the support and resources of our parent company, Teladoc Health.
- You will NOT be limited to a narrow set of responsibilities. We encourage employees to contribute ideas, develop new skills, collaborate across teams, and explore opportunities that support both their growth and the growing needs of the business.
- You will NOT be expected to navigate a culture driven by ego or unnecessary hierarchy. We value respectful collaboration, thoughtful debate, and teammates who are committed to shared success.
- You will NOT be expected to sacrifice your well-being to make an impact. We work hard and hold ourselves to high standards, all while supporting sustainable ways of working.
- You will NOT have to wonder why your work matters. The work we do here helps to expand access to mental health care and supports people seeking help when they need it.
Can I work remotely?
Yes. This role can be performed remotely from anywhere in the U.S. While we embrace the flexibility of remote work, we also value opportunities to bring teams together in person for collaboration and connection. BetterHelp covers approved expenses for company-requested travel, and reasonable accommodations are available for employees who are unable to travel.
