Traveler-Friendly Insight

Canonical is one of the most nomad-friendly employers in tech. Remote-first since 2004, this role has no fixed office requirement and no stated timezone restrictions — making it genuinely location-independent. As an Engineering Manager leading a distributed team, async communication is embedded in the culture by design.

Schedule flexibility: While no specific timezone windows are mentioned, managing engineers across multiple regions is common at Canonical, suggesting a degree of async-first operations. However, leadership roles typically require some overlap availability for team syncs and stakeholder calls — plan for 3-4 hours of flexible overlap capacity.

Travel requirement: Two company sprints per year, up to two weeks each — roughly 4 weeks of travel annually. Canonical provides Priority Pass lounge access and travel upgrades for long-haul events, which is a genuine perk for frequent travelers.

Visa considerations: With no country restrictions listed, you can work from virtually anywhere. Popular nomad destinations and relevant visa options:

  • Portugal (Lisbon): Digital Nomad Visa available; monthly costs ~$2,000–2,800 for a comfortable lifestyle — well-suited at this likely senior salary band.
  • Thailand (Chiang Mai/Bangkok): LTR Visa or tourist visa with border runs; monthly costs ~$1,200–2,000. Excellent value for a senior tech salary.
  • Colombia (Medellín): Digital Nomad Visa (up to 2 years); monthly costs ~$1,500–2,200. Growing tech community, UTC-5 timezone aids Americas overlap.

The $2,000/year L&D budget can also cover coworking memberships or professional certifications.
