Traveler-Friendly Insight

This role is a contract position with a hard requirement: candidates must be based in the EST (Eastern Standard Time) timezone. While the team works asynchronously across time zones, the EST constraint significantly limits geographic flexibility for digital nomads. You'd need to be in or simulate EST hours, which rules out casual slow-travel in Southeast Asia or Western Europe without deliberate schedule management.

Timezone logistics for nomads:

  • Lisbon, Portugal (WET/WEST): 5–6 hours ahead of EST. Early mornings could cover EST business hours, but sustained coverage is difficult.
  • Medellín, Colombia (COT, UTC-5): Same as EST — a near-perfect match. Colombia's digital nomad visa makes this a strong option for a longer stay.
  • Mexico City, Mexico (CST, UTC-6): Only 1 hour behind EST, very compatible. Mexico's Temporary Resident visa supports longer stays.

Since this is a contract role (not full-time employment), benefits like equity and PTO listed are for full-time employees and do not apply here. No salary data is published, so budgeting requires direct negotiation.

GitLab's all-remote culture and async-first approach make it a well-known nomad-friendly employer in principle, but this specific contract's EST anchor makes it best suited to nomads in the Americas. Look for Colombia, Mexico, or Eastern Canada as ideal base locations.

How GitLab Supports Full-Time Employees

Please note that we welcome interest from candidates with varying levels of experience; many successful candidates do not meet every single requirement. Additionally, studies have shown that people from underrepresented groups are less likely to apply to a job unless they meet every single qualification.
