Travel + Remote-Work Briefing — October 29, 2026

Travel + Remote-Work Briefing — October 29, 2026

Today's four stories all come down to what a trip really costs and where people want to go. Budget fares on Frontier have jumped sharply, with the airline pointing to pricing tactics, Spirit's exit and fuel costs, UK travelers are searching for cold-weather Christmas-market and Arctic escapes rather than sun, and Expedia is adding AI planning tools plus delay and fare perks for its Gold and Platinum loyalty members, while Best Western's loyalty program is being folded into a new WorldHotels brand. For remote workers and nomads, the takeaway is to budget more for getting around and book holiday-season travel early.

Why Are Frontier Fares Up So Much, and What Does It Mean for Budget Travel?

Frontier Airlines passengers paid about 71 percent more in base fares from July through September than a year earlier, according to The Points Guy's report on the carrier's third-quarter results.

Frontier's CEO attributed the jump in equal thirds to better revenue management, Spirit Airlines' May collapse and high jet fuel costs, TPG reported. Frontier and Spirit previously overlapped on roughly 30 percent of routes, and Frontier has since added routes Spirit flew. Industrywide, September ticket prices were up roughly 22 percent from a year earlier, TPG said, and Thanksgiving fares were up about 30 percent, according to Cirium data the outlet cited.

Frontier's earnings release filed with the SEC shows record third-quarter revenue of $1.4 billion, up 53 percent from the prior year. Fuel cost per gallon came in at $3.96, which the release says was $0.26 higher than the company had assumed in its guidance. Frontier still posted a GAAP net loss of $104 million for the quarter, with adjusted net income of $40 million. TPG notes the airline has not been profitable for a full year since 2019.

Two product changes are also coming, per TPG. Frontier plans to install first class, with flights available by early spring and upgrades to new recliner seats for elite Frontier Miles members. Starlink Wi-Fi rollout begins in early 2027, but Frontier has not said whether it will be free or paid.

Why it matters for remote workers and nomads: Our read, not Frontier's: the ultra-low-cost fares many of us treated as a floor are no longer reliably low, and with Spirit gone there is less competition to pull them back down. If you build your travel budget around hopping between cheap hubs, we would pad your transport line and book earlier for holiday windows, where TPG's Thanksgiving figure points to the steepest increases. Starlink on Frontier is worth watching, but with pricing unannounced and rollout not starting until 2027, we would not plan work hours around it yet. Which European destinations are trending for winter 2026, according to Tripadvisor?

Strasbourg, France, tops Tripadvisor's list of trending European winter destinations, followed by Tromsø, Norway, and Ghent, Belgium, according to Euronews Travel.

The ranking is based on Tripadvisor's analysis of UK traveler searches from August to October 2026 for winter getaways, per Euronews. The rest of the top 10: Saariselka, Finland; Chamonix, France; Zakopane, Poland; Bruges, Belgium; Nuremberg, Germany; Salzburg, Austria; and Riga, Latvia.

The pattern is cold, not warm. Aarushi Kumar, Associate Director of Research & Insights at Tripadvisor Group, is quoted by Euronews: "Arctic hideaways, Alpine towns and cosy Christmas market cities taking the top spots just shows that travellers are looking to lean into the colder season rather than escape it."

Euronews says Strasbourg's Christmas market runs for four weeks beginning November 27, with illuminated wooden chalets. The city is also home to the Cathedral of Our Lady of Strasbourg, known for its stained glass and astronomical clock. For Tromsø, the article points to Northern Lights tours, reindeer sledding and fjord fishing. In Ghent, it highlights the medieval Castle of the Counts. Further down the list, it lists snowmobile riding and husky safaris in Finland, ice skating in Bruges and thermal springs in Zakopane.

Two caveats. The data reflects UK travelers' searches, so it shows where British trip planners are looking, not where all travelers are headed. And search interest is not bookings. Tripadvisor's media room did not list a full release for this ranking when we checked on October 29, so the details here come from Euronews's reporting.

Why it matters for remote workers and nomads: This is our read, not Tripadvisor's. A list built on UK searches skews toward short festive breaks, so the places on it are likely to be busiest around Christmas market season, and a monthlong stay in Strasbourg, Ghent or Bruges may be easier to line up outside the market weeks. Neither Euronews nor Tripadvisor says anything about prices or crowd levels, so check them yourself before you commit to a base. Arctic spots such as Tromsø and Saariselka are the kind of places to book early, and our guide to finding cheap flights in 2026 can help you compare routes. Treat the list as a prompt to research a few places, not a recommendation to move there.

Which of Expedia's new AI features matter for people who book their own trips?

Expedia Group announced more than 30 new and enhanced features across Expedia, Hotels.com and Vrbo on Oct. 28, and the ones most relevant to self-booking travelers are the AI trip tools, flexible multi-city packages, and flight-price and delay protections for One Key Gold and Platinum members.

According to Expedia Group's fall 2026 product release, the AI additions include an Activity Planner, a conversational assistant for activity, restaurant and event suggestions, available in the U.S. on the Expedia app and Expedia.com. Property Expert lets travelers ask specific questions about a property and get answers grounded in property details and guest reviews. It is listed for U.S. web and app on Expedia and Hotels.com. Hotels.com also gets AI Compare, a side-by-side property comparison covering location, amenities, price and policy details, listed for the U.S.

The release says Expedia's more flexible packages let travelers bundle flights, stays and rental cars, including flying into one city and staying in another. Vrbo's natural language search, listed for U.S. English on web and app, lets users describe a stay in their own words. Vrbo's Reserve Now, Pay Later, with $0 due at reservation, is labeled "coming soon."

The Points Guy highlighted the loyalty perks. One Key Gold and Platinum members get free airport lounge access, for themselves plus up to nine travelers, when an eligible flight is delayed 90 minutes or more. The benefit applies to flights booked through Expedia by Dec. 31, 2027, and members may be offered One Key Cash instead. Price Drop Protection, also for Gold and Platinum members, pays back the difference in One Key Cash if a fare falls before departure, but only on flights that show the "Price Drop Protection" label at booking.

Why it matters for remote workers and nomads: This is our read, not Expedia's. The most useful items look like the flexible packages (flying into one city and leaving from another fits nomad itineraries) and the delay and fare protections, though they only help if you hold Gold or Platinum status. Several of the AI tools are listed for the U.S. only, so travelers booking from elsewhere should check availability before planning around them. We would treat the AI tools as research aids and still verify rates and policies on the booking page. For a broader look at the category, see our guide to AI tools for digital nomads.

What happens to Best Western Rewards points when the program becomes WorldHotels Rewards?

Best Western Rewards will merge into WorldHotels Rewards on January 5, 2027, and members will retain the value of their existing points, according to The Points Guy. The announcement came October 27 as parent company BWH Hotels adopted WorldHotels as its global masterbrand, covering more than 4,000 hotels across 18 brands in more than 100 countries.

Upgraded Points lays out the timeline: full program details are due November 16, members learn their new elite tier on December 14, and the redesigned program and app launch January 5. The outlet reports that the program shifts from five tiers to three, that members keep their current status until December 14 and that points will continue to never expire. It adds that Best Western credit cards will rebrand as WorldHotels Visa Signature cards in January and that the merged program combines roughly 70 million members. Tier names, earning rates and redemption rates have not been published, and The Points Guy notes that specifics on how balances transfer remain unspecified.

Why it matters for remote workers and nomads: This is our read. For nomads who string together weeks at midscale properties, earning and redemption rates decide whether the program still pays off, so the November 16 details are the real test. Neither outlet reports any deadline to spend points, but it is worth screenshotting your current tier and balance before the December 14 reassignment, and checking that points from stays that straddle January 5 post correctly.

What to watch

  • Whether other low-cost carriers report fare jumps like Frontier's as Thanksgiving and holiday travel approaches.
  • How crowded and pricey the trending Christmas-market cities get once markets such as Strasbourg's open on November 27.
  • When Expedia's U.S.-only AI tools reach other markets, and when Vrbo's Reserve Now, Pay Later launches.
  • WorldHotels Rewards' full program details, due November 16, including tier names and earning and redemption rates.
