Senior Backend Engineer at Alma - Remote France — Columbus

Traveler-Friendly Insight

This role is listed as remote from France only — meaning you must be a French resident for the duration of employment. It is not a location-independent position open to global nomads. The contract is a French CDI (permanent employment contract), which carries legal obligations tied to French labor law and social security contributions.

Remote flexibility is limited: Alma offers remote work within France, with only 2 weeks of full remote per year explicitly called out for summer travel. This suggests the default expectation is either Paris-based or remote within French timezone (CET/CEST), with likely synchronous collaboration requirements given the cross-functional squad structure.

Visa & residency considerations: You must already have the right to work in France (EU citizenship, valid work visa, or titre de séjour). France's digital nomad visa doesn't exist in the traditional sense — the closest option is a "Talent Passport" (Passeport Talent) for highly skilled workers, but this would require employer sponsorship.

For nomads who are French residents: The 2-week summer remote allowance could work well for a short stay in Lisbon or Barcelona. At French senior engineer salary levels (typically €70K–€90K), cost of living comparisons are favorable: Lisbon (~€2,000/mo), Barcelona (~€2,200/mo), and Medellín (~€900/mo) all offer significant purchasing power advantages.

  • No equipment stipend or coworking allowance mentioned
  • Sustainable Mobility Package (€544.80/yr) is excluded for full-remote workers
