Remote Sales Engineer at Harness - SF Bay Area — Columbus
Traveler-Friendly Insight
This role is listed as remote, based in the San Francisco, CA area — meaning Harness expects you to be geographically anchored to the Bay Area. This is a significant limitation for digital nomads. The position explicitly requires travel throughout a sales territory, often on short notice, which presupposes a stable home base near a major airport hub.
Timezone constraints: Sales engineering in the U.S. market means you'll be syncing with enterprise customers (likely PT/ET business hours) and attending field events. Fixed availability during US Pacific business hours is effectively required, making async work largely incompatible with this role.
Compensation context: The stated pay range of $265,000–$285,000 USD annually is calibrated for San Francisco cost of living. If you were hypothetically working from a lower-cost location:
- Lisbon, Portugal: A $265K salary would represent extraordinary purchasing power — roughly 5-6x the average local tech salary — but US work authorization is required, ruling out EU residency as a primary base.
- Bangkok, Thailand: Similarly lucrative in PPP terms, but the travel requirement and US customer focus make sustained remote presence impractical.
- Medellín, Colombia: A popular nomad hub, but again the territory travel obligation and US work auth requirement eliminate this option.
Bottom line: This is not a nomad-compatible role. If you value location flexibility, look for fully distributed Sales Engineer roles at companies without geographic anchor requirements. The monthly internet reimbursement is a minor remote perk, but it doesn't offset the structural need to remain SF-based.
