Travel + Remote Work Briefing — October 17, 2026
Today's stories are about planning your next move, not just your next trip. United and Air Canada laid out new summer 2027 routes between the US and Canada, though most are seasonal. A tourism report puts Guimarães, Portugal's first capital, forward as a quieter alternative to Lisbon. And a new contemporary art centre on Île Seguin gives longer-stay Paris residents a reason to look past the city center. In each case, check the details yourself before you commit to a base.
Which New US-Canada Routes Are Coming in Summer 2027?
United and Air Canada plan six new US-Canada routes for summer 2027, three flown by each carrier, according to The Points Guy.
United's three are Newark to St. John's (YYT) as summer seasonal service, plus Denver to Ottawa (YOW) and Denver to Quebec City (YQB). The Points Guy says the St. John's flight is United's first to that city since 2016, giving it a new easternmost Canadian destination. The article gives no start dates for any of the three.
Air Canada's three are Louisville (SDF) to Toronto Pearson (YYZ) with flights between April 28 and Oct. 31, 2027; Indianapolis (IND) to Montreal Trudeau (YUL) daily from June 1 to Sept. 30; and Newark to Edmonton (YEG) with four weekly flights from June 1 to Oct. 17. Air Canada's announcement confirms the same three routes and dates.
Air Canada is also dropping five US routes, per The Points Guy: Boston-Toronto Billy Bishop, Charleston-Toronto Pearson, Nashville-Vancouver, Raleigh-Durham-Vancouver and Seattle-Montreal. The carriers' joint venture is described as under review by Canadian regulators.
Why it matters for remote workers and nomads: Our read: the new routes are mostly seasonal, so they help summer trips more than year-round bases. Air Canada's Indianapolis and Edmonton flights are scheduled to end by Sept. 30 and Oct. 17, 2027, so a late-fall plan built on them could leave you without a direct option. Anyone who relied on the five cut routes will need new connections. Treat all of it as schedules that can change, and compare fares using our flight-booking guide before committing to a Canadian stay.
Is Guimarães, Portugal's first capital, becoming a Lisbon alternative?
Guimarães, a northern Portuguese city roughly 35 miles northeast of Porto, is drawing a growing share of visitors, according to a recent Travel Off Path report. The outlet says overnight stays rose 9.4% year-on-year in the first half of 2026, with June alone up almost 16%. It also says the city ranked 29th among Portugal's 308 municipalities for overnight stays, which suggests it is growing from a modest base.
The report describes a mid-size city in a municipality of over 165,000 people. It lists a 10th-century castle and a UNESCO-protected historic center among its draws. On costs, it puts a main dish at around $14-28 and a combined castle and palace ticket at around $9. It also cites recorded crime of 17.8 per 1,000 residents, against a national rate of 29.7.
The article is tourism-focused. It does not cover internet speeds, coworking spaces, rail links or visa rules, and the "surging" in its headline is the outlet's framing rather than an independent measure.
Why it matters for remote workers and nomads: Our read: the figures point to a quieter, lower-priced corner of Portugal worth a look if Lisbon feels crowded, but they describe tourism, not remote-work conditions. Before booking a stay, check connectivity, workspace options and transport yourself, and confirm visa rules on our digital nomad visa tracker.
What is opening on Île Seguin, the island just outside Paris?
Large, a contemporary art centre on Île Seguin in Boulogne-Billancourt, opens its first exhibition on October 17, 2026, according to Wallpaper. RCR Arquitectes, the Catalan firm that won the Pritzker Prize in 2017, designed the building. It totals 5,000 square meters across six floors, with a 1,000-square-meter main gallery, a panoramic terrace and a café designed by Constance Guisset.
The opening show, Moteur Imaginaire/Imaginary Engine, runs through March 7, 2027, and features 120 artworks exploring automobiles and industry, Wallpaper reports. Wallpaper also says 40 percent of the space is open to all, and the exhibition is free for anyone aged 26 or under.
Large sits at one tip of the island in the Pointe des Arts complex, which Sortiraparis describes as also including a Pathé cinema with eight screens, including an IMAX, and a 4-star hotel. La Seine Musicale, a Shigeru Ban-designed concert hall, opened at the other end in 2017, per Wallpaper. Sortiraparis says access is expected to improve with Line 15 of the metro and possible river shuttles.
Why it matters for remote workers and nomads: Our read: this is a low-cost rainy-day or weekend outing for anyone based in Paris for a month or more, especially those aged 26 or under, given the free exhibition. Sortiraparis lists pointedesarts.fr as the complex's website, so check there for hours and ticket prices before you go, since we could not confirm them in the sources we read. Our read: the hotel and transit upgrades are still described as expected, so don't plan a base around them yet.
What to watch
- Canadian regulators' review of the United-Air Canada joint venture, and start dates for United's three new routes.
- Large's opening show, Moteur Imaginaire/Imaginary Engine, runs through March 7, 2027.
- Île Seguin's hotel and Line 15 metro access, both still described as expected.
