Travel + Remote Work Briefing — October 13, 2026
Both of today's stories are about European bases, and both are lists that need checking before you rely on them. Ryanair's list of 13 airport exits matters if your winter plans depend on cheap hops into the Turkish and Greek coasts or Bremen. A new 2027 city-break ranking puts Sofia first, but it was decided by a reader vote and tells you nothing about working there. Read each list for what it actually measures, then check it against your own plans.
Which airports is Ryanair dropping, and what should nomads do?
Ryanair is ending service at 13 airports, Simple Flying reported on October 13, 2026. Twelve of the exits fall in 2026, and Bremen, Germany, follows on March 27, 2027.
Here is the 2026 list by the month reported: Vigo (January); Amman, Asturias, Clermont-Ferrand, Ponta Delgada and Terceira (March); Rodez (August); and Bodrum, Dalaman, Kalamata, Niš and Volos (October). For Bremen, Ryanair cited excessive access costs, including air traffic control fees, security fees and high airport charges, plus Germany's air passenger duty. Simple Flying says six Bremen routes remain until the closure.
Why it matters for nomads: Check any booking tied to these airports. Several of the October exits are Turkish and Greek coastal airports, so winter-base plans there may need another carrier or a different gateway. Use the list to check your itinerary. It isn't a verdict on the region. The source does not say whether other airlines will replace any of these routes. Our guide to finding cheaper flights in 2026 covers alternatives.
Does Sofia topping Europe's 2027 city-break ranking make it a good work base?
Not on its own, because the ranking is a popularity vote, not an assessment of work conditions. Sofia, Bulgaria, placed first in European Best Destinations' 2027 city-break ranking, ahead of Lisbon and Copenhagen, Travel Tomorrow reported. Cannes, Basel, Bristol, Leuven, Milan, Calpe and Verona completed the top 10, according to Euronews.
Travel Tomorrow described the method: newsletter subscribers voted over 33 days. There were 11,614 participants, each choosing up to three destinations from a shortlist of 64 places picked by independent travel journalists.
Why it matters for nomads: The list reflects votes on city-break appeal, so it tells you nothing about internet reliability, coworking options, rent or visa rules. We'd treat Sofia as a reason to start researching, not as proof that it's a good base. Start with our guide to digital nomad visa countries, and try any city with a short stay before committing.
What to watch
- Whether another carrier picks up any of the Turkish, Greek or Azores routes Ryanair is leaving.
- How Ryanair's six remaining Bremen routes change before the final departure on March 27, 2027.
- Whether other 2027 city rankings that measure costs or connectivity agree with this reader vote.
