Private Equity Buys Into Aeroplan: What It Means for Miles

Blackstone is nearing a deal to buy a minority stake in Aeroplan, Air Canada's frequent-flyer program, for roughly $2 billion, according to Bloomberg reporting cited by One Mile at a Time and Investing.com on Aug. 10, 2026. The stake is reported at around 20 percent, though neither outlet describes that figure as officially confirmed, and some Canadian funds are expected to co-invest alongside Blackstone. An announcement could come within days, Investing.com's reporting on the Bloomberg story said.

Air Canada is raising the money to help fund a multibillion-dollar aircraft-purchase program and cabin-interior retrofits as it expands its route network, according to View from the Wing. The airline currently operates more than 300 aircraft and expects to reach nearly 400 by 2030.

Aeroplan has grown into one of Air Canada's more valuable assets since the airline reacquired the program from Aimia in 2018. It now counts more than 10 million active members, up from more than five million when the buyback closed, and it collected CAD$1.98 billion from partners for points issued in 2025 alone, per View from the Wing's review of Air Canada's own figures. The airline's deferred revenue balance tied to outstanding point liabilities stands at $4 billion — a rough measure of how much future travel it owes its own members.

The deal would make Aeroplan the latest airline loyalty program to attract outside capital as carriers increasingly treat frequent-flyer programs as standalone financial assets rather than pure retention tools. Both Bloomberg's reporting and One Mile at a Time note this is a minority position, and it's not yet clear whether the investment comes with governance rights. One Mile at a Time cautioned that outside investment firms taking stakes in consumer-facing businesses typically don't improve things for the people who use them, while also noting the direct impact on members should be limited given the minority stake.

What This Means for Remote Workers and Nomads

For anyone stretching a remote income by banking miles instead of paying full fare on long-haul routes, this deal is a reminder that points have become a financial instrument, not just a loyalty perk. What a private-equity stakeholder's return horizon might mean for Aeroplan's redemption rates is a genuine open question worth watching, not a settled outcome — nothing in the current reporting says Blackstone will push the program toward pricier awards or tighter availability, and the stake is a minority position without confirmed governance control.

But the deal fits a trend that's already visible without any PE involvement: airlines have been steadily walling off saver-level award space to their own program's members, making partner-miles bookings harder to find regardless of who owns the loyalty program. The practical response is to treat points as a depreciating currency rather than a savings account — burn miles for trips already on the calendar instead of stockpiling them for someday, and check live award space before assuming last year's redemption still holds, since programs adjust charts with little warning. It's also worth spreading value across more than one loyalty program instead of concentrating everything in a single airline's miles that a financial buyer could later reshape. Nothing here means panic; Aeroplan isn't devaluing today. But nomads who plan trips around finding the cheapest fares should watch how this stake is structured once the deal is finalized.
